JP Maroney Gets Beaten Up Over Weekend!

By JP Maroney | January 14, 2008

It’s Monday…

And, I’m in serious pain today!

Why?

Because I got beaten up this weekend.

Here’s the story:

Last Friday, I released my very first “Mr. Monetizer Show” podcast.

iTunes gave me the green light. And, I was on cloud 9.

Then, the beating began…

The first person to “break it to me” was Tonya, my wife.

I gotta tell you — what she said to me hurt deeply (mostly my ego). Mainly because I trust her insight, intuition, and opinion without reserve.

She basically said, “It was a bad idea to make that your first podcast. All you did was commercial after commercial after commercial. There wasn’t any value.”

>>>>> Ouch!!! <<<<<

She added, “Don’t promote that podcast … whatever you do.”

Too late!

I had already released it to you and the other members of my list on Friday.

Suddenly, I found myself hoping that nobody checked their emails on Friday.

That those who DID check their email DID NOT open my email about the podcast.

And, that those who opened my email were too busy to go listen to it.

>>>>> Wishful thinking! <<<<<

If Tonya’s words of truth weren’t painful enough, Sunday I received the following “comment” on my Mr. Monetizer site.

“JP, I have to say, this was a very poor first podcast of yours. I like your other products but this podcast was nothing but a sales pitch for stuff with absolutely no content at all. If people judge whether they should listen to future podcasts based on this one you will be hurting. You need content, give people a reason to listen. Good luck.”

You can see why I’m feeling battered and bruised today, eh?

So, here’s the deal…

They were right!

I blew it.

It hurts to admit it. And, it hurts even worse to hear it from others.

But, it’s true.

And, I’m going to make it up to you.

Sunday I went “back into the studio” and recorded Episode #2 of the Mr. Monetizer Show podcast.

I planned it with greater care and purpose than Episode #1.

I packed in content. And, value.

I also announced an exciting new listener-focused segment for the show. (more on that later)

All in all, I think it’s good.

Far from perfect — because I hope to continue getting better and better and better over time.

But, I’m pleased to bring it to you.

Give it a listen. And, let me know what you think! (Be gentle :) )

Disclaimer:

Will I promote products and services for sale on future shows?

Of course I will. I have a business to run.

But, I promise to give you an enjoyable, balanced blend of valuable, immediately useable content along with any promotion.

Fair enough?

OK — give it a listen…

    Lol.
It was like Tonya raided my mind for her comments after I has listened to your 1st podcast (which is an attempt at finding an innovative & original way of stating that I concur & we clearly thought much alike on the matter). The sad reality is that there are thousands of other podcasts competing with yours for my listening time.

I think it is not overdoing it to state that I felt cheated. Not in some moral sense, I understand that this is your site, if you wanted to record the last embittered whelps of animals you clubbed to death & put that out to the world on here, you would be most certainly entitled, all the ramifications being yours.
I felt cheated in that I put faith into the fact that you would be up to speed with market competition for my time & that you would be one of the top performers and so worthy of selection over *everyone else*. The result did not even begint to justify this faith, you weren’t & so I felt duped.

It actually is endearing that you admit to this & that even a man of your experience could make such a glaring oversight. Those of us that don’t know you personally could be led to conclude that this was a purposeful risky play to buy alot of relational sincerity by making this embarrasing mistake setting it up to permit you to then play the ’sincerity’ card. ;)

    Isn’t it all a marvellous game? :D

I had less time to listen to your 2nd podcast.
Especially having already needed to find surplus time in my daily plans to listen to the 1st & then compose this reply on your blog since you seem to have no direct way of being contancted for intelligent discourse (again a grave oversight imho). The situation is worsened when you consider that a significant portion of the US still do not have broadband internet & your second 13MB download would take around 10 minutes to download(!)

    Another startling thought
When you waste time, you often not only waste just your own, but that of all your potential custom. A lot of time when put together.
    E.g.
Say you have 1000 customers & you waste 10 minutes of their time by making them listen to a 10 minute ad disguised as a podcast (& did not specify that it was going to be an ad & what for).
You just burned 10,000 minutes of time altogether. That is 166.66 hours or just shy of a week of time. A whole week!

On the upside I like the intro jingle but get rid of the backing singer, leave the whispered ‘monitizer’ it works beautifully with the cash register sound effect.
    Great.

The 2nd one was better than the first, but that is not saying much (as we know).
It can only get better JP. Try until.

    Regards to you & Tonya,

    Wez

    Hi J.P,
I actually just listened to the first Podcast this morning…and, I admit, I had the same thoughts.
BUT - Thanks for letting us all know that the 2nd one will be a bit different!

Good luck with everything, I’ll be listening!!

@ Wez … Thanks for commenting. Wow! what a long post. Tells me you either have a lot of time on your hands, or you felt strongly about the podcast (I’m guessing the latter).

Was my MASSIVE BLUNDER all on purpose to create some type of reverse psychological game with my readers, listeners and clients? Normally, I would (in my kindest voice possible) say, “YOU HAVE GOT TO BE delusional, Wez!”

But, having seen some of the stupid stunts pulled by idiot internet marketers over the last few years … I can see your point.

However, please trust me when I tell you — I have more at stake with my reputation … and certainly better ways of building relationships with my audience … than attempting some twisted “reverse strategy” like putting out that first (very weak) podcast.

Thanks for the comments about the bumper music … I have a short interview with the guy who creates those audio trademarks. I’ll be sharing that on an upcoming episode of the Mr. Monetizer Show.

Since it’s a matter of opinion and personal taste, I’ll leave it as is (a number of people have had the opposite opinion from you on this one). But, I give you permission to put your fingers in your ears when the vocals are playing. :)

    Hopefully, you’ll give episode #2 - http://mrmonetizer.com/show/?p=8 - a solid listen, and…

    a) Give me a “shout out” and…
    b) Take me up on my offer for a “Monetize Me!” session on the show…

    Now…

@ Maria… good to hear from you. It’s been a while. Hope your business is going very well.

#2 is online — so be sure to give it a listen. Again, you can find it IN iTunes, or at: http://mrmonetizer.com/show/?p=8

    Hi JP,

Don’t knock yourself out about #1 show. I thought it made a good intro into what you’re about.

#2 show was great! Good content. Good interview with Ryan Healey. Many hints and tips - always welcome.

A chance to shout out your message.

A chance to have JP work on your marketing for free.

    What more do you want?

    Looking forward to #3.

    Best regards, Ron Mileham.
