JP Maroney’s “Contest Contest”

By JP Maroney | May 9, 2008

I want to put together a contest… to help promote my new weekly Mr. Monetizer Radio Show, engage the listeners (this could be you), and grow my audience base.

FAST…

So as I was “brainstorming” <<<<<—- dangerous! — about different types of contests we could have.

And, the thought hit me….

“Why Not Have A CONTEST To Come Up With The CONTEST?”

Silly? Maybe…

Fun? I hope so!

So here’s the deal. Each week I host a 1-hour radio show called the Mr. Monetizer Show. We’re now in our sixth week of programming.

It’s been lots of fun — and a heck of a learning experience.

Every week, the listener numbers have increased. Plus, I’m getting feedback and inquirees EVERY WEEK — so it’s well worth my time.

(one more little hidden secret about the show that I’ll share in the near future)

Anyhow, I want to grow the listener numbers EVEN BIGGER — and EVEN FASTER!

Thus, this contest idea.

So, we’re having a “Contest Contest!”

A contest to come up with the contest to grow the listener base.

I want to get WAY outside the box. I want to go extremely viral — get people spreading the word faster than a Texas Tornado.

Have any ideas?

What would excite you enough to:

  1. Listen to the show each week!
  2. Want to help spread the word!
  3. (in your opinion) attract lots of NEW listeners?

NOTE: I have a fresh, new guest on the show each week. Each of these guys and gals are experts/authors/etc. And, all of them have fairly good size email lists.

Each has agreed to promote the show THEY appear on — so that’s another asset we can leverage.

OK boys and girls … fire away! I’m ready for your ideas.

And — as far as the Contest Contest Prize goes ——- hmmmmm….

What should that be?

Tell you what, I’m going to come up with a big package of goodies for the person who comes up with the best idea for the new contest — I might even have some runner up prizes.

This blog post was a bit spur of the moment … I’ll post an update (ie: The PRIZES) in the next day or two.

But let’s get our juices flowing… fire at will. Post your comments below:

    Idea running through my mind!

People who promote the show to their LIST / address book / blog, etc get mentioned and promoted on the Mr. Monetizer Show and on the http://www.mrmonetizer.com website.

    Hi, JP,

The winner of the contest could have you personally record the outgoing message on the winner’s phone answering machine. Something like, “Hello, this is Mr. Monetizer, JP Maroney. _____ isn’t here to take your call, but I’m sure she’d like to talk with you. So just please leave her your name, phone number, and the purpose of your call, and I’m sure she’ll get right back to you.” That’d be a hoot to have, especially in your cute Tixas accent.

    Hey JP;
You could have a scavenger hunt of sorts, looking for answers or information. You could mention clues on the show, on your blog, your mailing list, your guests could mention clues on their blogs or to their mailing lists, etc.. You could have small prices for each week and then a grand prize for the first person to complete all sections (weeks) of the contest. And like you say, maybe some runner up prizes too. This would be fun and get people listening and browsing your blog and your guest’s blogs too.

    Whoooooo Doggie!

    We’re already cookin’ aren’t we?

@ BETH — Thanks, Beth! That actually sounds pretty cool. Though I would NEVER have though anybody would want that … sounds fun!

@ FRED — WICKED Idea! We have to flesh out details of how that might work logistically … but man you’ve got my brain churning.

    Yahoo Mr Monetizer,

well since the main idea is let people know about the show… and get people to listen… what about an opt-in system with bonuses…

you could have a list of sponsors and to get the bonuses (also provided by the sponsors) people would have to pick a sponsor.

The sponsor with the most hits wins a trip to Hawaii or something like that… or a special set of promos for their company on your show.

    1st place 15 spots
    2nd place 10 spots
    3rd place 5 spots

    Great idea JP,

    @ PAUL…

Look at you with your bad self! Mr. Sterling!!!!!!!

Very cool idea — if you have a chance would love to hear more about what you mean by “sponsor” — the person with a list? Or any of my listeners? Or what?

You know what — using the promos on my show is a GREAT idea. I have control over 1/2 the commercial time on my show.

    This is getting REALLY exciting.

I love contests!!! How about a contest to find the worst/ or at least bad sales page and then they get a make-over ( make-overs are always BIG) on TV. You could have people submit their friends or a business site, a site that’s supposed to monetize of course. You could have a place to view all the bad examples ( very funny- like the funniest commercials approach). I was thinking of doing a modified version of this myself but You could really make it work well. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Some people who use the web are just starting to build a list and have no opt-in page or “squeeze page” set up but may have a site to to that for them. Perhaps a prize for who gets the most feedback / opt-ins after a mention (ad) on your program.

The retention or success ration for most purely-online programs or businesses is very poor.

The program I promote is to associate with a 36 year old Co. the business is a service but the seller has almost no customer service responsibilities, and the program has an excellent residual income program. visit http://paulschlehr.buildlastingsuccess.com for a start to evaluate the program.

When I did my co-hosting on the “Business Beat” Radio show we would scour national and local business magazines and prescreen local business people to attend the show or call in for their interview and respond on how our local area might be involved or affected…positively and negatively.

I would also take a particular marketing or sales strategy which would be used to educate our audience and request callers to express their experiences in these areas.

We also had some latitude in the shows advertising and here’s where the contest winner gets his/her reward.

The winner will get Mr. Monetizer will to do the actual advertisement for or with the lucky winner.

The contest could be the person who actually supplies a paying advertiser for the show.

Or…a person who calls in and keeps the show moving along with great stories.

Or…a person who acts as a roving interviewer. This person can go into eating establishments and interview or ask questions relavent to the show…and calls in during the show.

Or…JP can get his mother and tell the listeners what a hard working, smart, honest young man she raised. Here JP is the contest winner and Mom gets a dinner at a local upscale restaurant…Hey, she’s your mom!
